"To even begin to understand why anyone would even consider braving such dangerous conditions to construct one of these bad boys, one needs to understand the Zwillings—or at least try to. Raised in Sauk Rapids where their father Sunny owned a sawmill, Chuck and his eleven (that’s right, eleven) siblings are as comfortable wielding chainsaws as most folks are riding a bike. Pair that machinery experience with an innate love of a challenge and you’ve got a recipe for quite the family tradition." - Exerpt from Blog Feature

2021 Round-Up

We may not have enhanced our previous world record but we still had a ton of successes at I.C.E. Fest 2021… even during a pandemic year and the coldest February weekend temps ever!

    - $18,000 donated to Flyer Pride Pack and Kare Kloset. That’s 10% more money donated than ever before.
    - 45% more activities ( New this year were plane rides, log rolling, and 2 days of dog sledding, evolution of Ice Cutting, Education Tent)
    - 10% more sponsors. THANK YOU!
    - 40% more volunteers. THANK YOU!
    - First 250 meter, 50 million pound, 12 acre disc of ice to spin 90 feet, altho NOT a full rotation for the record!

🤯   And check out these mind blowing numbers about this year’s disc/attempted Ice Carousel…

    - 65% more ice removed to make the canal (124,000 pounds -> 205,000 pounds)
    - 58% faster cutting (9.2 second per foot -> 5.4 seconds per foot)
    - 31% heavier (38 million pounds -> 50 million pounds)
    - 20% more area (10 -> 12 acres)
    - 10% further across (750’ -> 820’)
    - 10% larger circumference (0.44 -> 0.49 miles)
    - And of course, all of this while it was….100% colder!

We had a blast and can't wait for next year's event!
Donations and sponsorships have helped the family’s 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Pay It Forward Foundation, raise over $36,000 for local causes. This year, proceeds from the event will go to the Flyer Pride Pack weekend food program at Little Falls Community Schools and Kids in Need, both of which are organizations aimed at stomping out childhood hunger

--Chuck Zwilling informed Little Falls Radio Sunday of his gratitude and thanks to all who helped make the ICE Fest 2020 a success back in February. They fundraiser raised over $15,000 (and counting) for Flyer Pride Pack and the Care Closet at the local schools. They again broke the world record for the large ice carousel at 749 feet across the Green Prairie Fish Lake weighing around 19,000 tons. It spun in rotation for over 24 hours. Zwilling stated Monday on Little Falls Radio that he will be doing the ice carousel part of the event on the lake again next February and is hopeful that Ice Fest 2021 can happen. They have to wait like others with the restrictions and see what it looks like next year with the events around the Ice Fest 2021.

--Chuck Zwilling gave an update on 4th Annual Sunny Zwilling Memorial ICE Fest 2021 scheduled for February 13th and 14th on Green Prairie-Fish Lake north of Little Falls. Zwilling said that if the Governor's restrictions on large gatherings remain in place that they would have to go to a virtual event with drones, Facebook Live and video showing around the lake to show the work on the ice carousel as they try and break (for now) their own world record from last year (Quebec may still try it before event, but Chuck was unclear on that). All the proceeds raised go to Flyer Pride Pack (back pack food programs for the Little Falls Community School District) and the Care Closet at the High School for those in need of items and food. In the previous 3 years the event has raised around $36,000 for those two groups.

If they can't gather for the event than all the monies go to the two groups as less money would be needed for the event (food, concessions, outdoor activites and other miscellaneous items). Zwilling is still looking for a paramedic, EMT or First Responders to help for a few hours. Any volunteers to donate their time with the event on February 13th and 14th or if you have questions go to MnIceFest.com or you contact Chuck Zwilling at 320-249-1504.

--Chuck Zwilling announced Tuesday on KLTF that the Sunny Zwilling Memorial Ice Extravaganza on Green Prairie Fish Lake is on for February 13th and 14th. They will be following state and county protocols for safety measures and members from public health and the sheriff's office will be on hand that weekend. The ice is at 12-14 inches of thickness and that is enough to have some events planned for the weekend including Striders bikes in the snow, curling events, figure skating, speed skaters, building an igloo, log rolling competition, snowshoeing, fishing, paragliding if weather cooperates, dogsledding and much more. Zwilling said the attempt for the world record ice carousel which they currently hold they will try and break again and cones are already being put up on the lake to mark the spots. Zwilling said recently they have been added to the Guiness Book of World Records as an actual item (in prior years that is was not a recognized event) and now they have made it a category. The event will have parking restrictions and hand sanitizing and other safety items that week to keep all safe but they are still planning for a fun filled two day event this year. Proceeds and donations can be made to help the Flyer Pride Backpack Program and the Kare Kloset at the community high school to help those with items, in the past two years they have raised around $36,000 for the projects. For more information and if you can volunteer has they are need of those please contact Chuck through the facebook of mnicefest.com.

--Chuck Zwilling of Ice Fest the Sunny Zwilling Ice Carousel Extravagana was on KLTF Tuesday and said the event is a go even with the cold weather this weekend so bundle up and come on out. The event is 10am-6pm both days on Green Prairie Fish Lake, park in the beach area there will be enough parking. Numerous events from log rolling, fishing, snowshoeing from Kinship, underwater dones, some refreshments and many other items to view and take in. Zwilling said if you want to watch the spinning of the ice carousel as they break the world record best time would be around noon to 2pm Saturday as some times they get it rotation for hours and sometimes not so much takes place as Mother Nature decides on when it stops. Also a free will donation to help Flyer Pride Backpack Program and the Care Closet at Little Falls Community schools will be given in the past years around $36,000 as been raised by Ice Fest. If you need more information or can volunteer some time even one hour Thursday through Sunday to set up, take down and help in other areas go to mnicefest.com and all the details are on there. Zwilling wanted to thank all the sponsors helping out with this as the numbers keep growing, they will be following safety protocols by public health and the sheriff's office and there will be a warming tent for those who need to warm up a bit with temps expected to be well below zero throughout the entire event this weekend.

--Chuck Zwilling and his daughter Becca announced on Monday that they have given at check for $18,000 to Little Falls Community Schools for their Flyer Pride Backpack Program and Care Kloset to help feed the hungry children and clothed those in need during the school year. This was the largest one year total for Ice Fest which was held Valentine's weekend earlier this month on Green Prairie Fish Lake. With the $18.000 they have now in 4 years given over $54,000 to the school to help those projects and they wanted to personally thank all the volunteers, organizations that showed up including log rolling, dog sledding, Santa Claus, plane rides and other items from the lake. Temperatures were very cold both days where Sunday did not ever get above zero but that did not keep the people from coming out taking in the events and using the warming tents a lot. Unfortunately the one thing that could not be achieved was the breaking of the ice carousel record which the Zwilling family had held from the year before and got put in Guiness Book of World Records for it. The carousel was cut but the very cold conditions caused it to refreeze each night and they had to start again each morning and they could not get the ice to rotate around one full rotation which was needed for them to qualify for the world record.

Chuck stated the group of Finland this week is working on breaking the world record and if successful would given the Zwilling family more reason to try and make it a bigger success in 2022.

Becca said that if you would still like to donate to the icefest cause go to the mnicefest.com website to see pictures and find out how to donate. They are looking forward to the next one in February of 2022.

Ice carousel record-holders seek to best themselves as part of fundraising event

Organizers of the fourth annual Sunny Zwilling Memorial Ice Carousel Extravaganza (or I.C.E. Fest) attempted to break their own record for the world’s largest ice carousel during the two-day festival that started Saturday, Feb. 13, in Little Falls.

Written By: Frank Lee | Feb 15th 2021 - 4am.
Record-holders for the world’s largest ice carousel attempted to best themselves during a two-day festival in Little Falls aimed at raising money for children in need.

But while the frigid weather thwarted efforts to budge the carousel during the fourth annual Sunny Zwilling Memorial Ice Carousel Extravaganza (or I.C.E. Fest), the event was successful in collecting cash for two Little Falls school programs.

“We got it to spin about 70 feet Saturday — moving about 50 million pounds — but it didn’t make a full rotation,” said Chuck Zwilling, president of the Pay it Forward Foundation, a Little Falls-based nonprofit that hosted the event.

Other activities announced as part of I.C.E. Fest that began Saturday, Feb. 13, at Green Prairie Fish Lake included curling, log rolling, spearfishing, dog sled rides, sleigh rides, ice fishing, figure skating, igloo-building, snowshoeing and more.

“But we did not enhance our own world record,” he said of their own Guinness World Record of a 749-foot diameter ice carousel in 2020. “I’m fine. I’m over it. I’m not crushed or anything.”

The fundraiser benefited Flyer Pride Packs, a weekend food program for students facing food insecurity, and Kare Kloset, a resource for students struggling to have basic needs met at home. The annual event raised about $15,000 last year and hopes were to raise at least that much with this year’s event, according to Zwilling’s daughter Becca Ruegemer, an I.C.E. Fest coordinator.

“I’m gonna guess we’ll have at least $15,000 to donate for Flyer Pride Packs and Kare Kloset, so, you know, not exactly a failure when you can donate that much money,” Zwilling said of the free-will donations.

The Pay It Forward Foundation/I.C.E. Fest has donated more than $36,000 to help feed hungry children since its conception in 2018, and more than 65 Little Falls area businesses have come together to help sponsor this year’s event, but the extreme cold played a huge factor this year.

“You had no time to kind of fine-tune the cuts or anything like that before it froze up again,” Zwilling said.

The ice cutters used two “chain saw chariots” designed and built by Ruegemer’s husband Mike and operated by him and his friend Bo Meyer.

“Becca’s husband, who’s a respiratory therapist by day and kind of a mechanical genius at night, created these,” Zwilling said of the chain saws affixed to a wheeled base. “They cut like a champ. They were self-propelled. They were actually pushed by like vintage snowblowers. ”

Ice cutters were out Saturday recutting the ice channel that separated the carousel from the rest of the frozen lake in an effort to get the disc spinning.

“On Friday, we cut and removed all of the ice in two hours, which is, quite frankly, a world record also. … And if somebody would’ve told me they cut all of this in four man-hours, I probably would have called them a liar,” Zwilling said.

Four electric trolling motors spaced about 30 feet each from the disc’s edge were used in this past weekend’s effort to make the carousel completely spin to break the world record.

“We pushed about 245,000 pounds of ice under the ice to the outside, so that it doesn’t create a problem,” Zwilling said. “Two years ago, we started at noon on Friday, and by, like, one o’clock the next day, it stopped spinning, so when Mother Nature just decides you’re done, that’s it.”

    Baby, it's very cold outside: Wind chill could hit 50 below zero this weekend

    The highs and lows for the weekend don't look too promising but with this covid-19 pandemic still in effect hopefully folks will bundle up to do some social distancing and come out for a day of free family fun. Those "masks" are gonna be helpful this weekend so let's have some fun!!

    As you bundle up against winter's cold, don't forget to keep up the fight against COVID-19, including wearing a face covering, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "In cold weather, wear your mask under your scarf, ski mask or balaclava,” the CDC recommends.

    Baby, it's very cold outside: Wind chill could hit 50 below zero this weekend

    Reported by: Sarah Kocher - St. Cloud Times You've been warned by the National Weather Service: It's a chilly one out there.

    The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for central and southern Minnesota beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday and running through midday Sunday, around 1 p.m. Until then, there's a wind chill advisory for the portion of the state along and north of Minnesota Highway 23

    During the advisory, the wind chill will be close to 25 degrees below zero, but during the wind chill warning, prepare for wind chills as low as 50 degrees below zero. The National Weather Service advises avoiding outdoor activities, and if you can't, bundle up big-time. The wind chills can quickly cause frostbite on exposed skin.

    The warning transitions to a watch Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for areas west of Interstate Highway 35. According to the National Weather Service, wind chill values could reach 35 degrees BELOW ZERO during this time.

    Here's a look at the forecast for the coming days.

    Annual I.C.E. Fest Brings Outdoor Family Fun to Little Falls

    by: Alex Svejkovsky Published: February 8, 2021 Archived

    LITTLE FALLS - You can check out the World's Largest Ice Carousel this weekend up in Little Falls.

    The Annual Sunny Zwilling Memorial Ice Carousel Extravaganza, also known as I.C.E. Fest, is this Saturday and Sunday.

    Event Organizer Chuck Zwilling says what began as a small family get together, quickly grew into community wide event for all ages.
    Now it includes dog sledding, igloo building, snow shoeing, figure skating, hockey, curling, new this year is also log rolling, so there is just tons of activities.

    This year's ice carousel will again be solar powered and large enough to break the family's existing record (current record is 749'/228 meters).

    Zwilling says even with this being an outdoor event, they are making sure to follow all COVID-19 protocols.
    The Morrison County Health Department has giving us our guidelines on what to do. We need to have a COVID preparedness play, stay six feet apart, wear a mask, so yes we are COVID compliant as I call it.

    Zwilling says while its a free event, all money raised through donations or sponsorships this weekend will go to the Flyer Pride Pack program to help stomp out children's hunger.

    The free two day event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days at Green Prairie Fish Lake in Little Falls.

    Since 2018, the Pay It Forward Foundation/I.C.E. Fest has donated over $36,000 to help feed hungry children.

    McRecord: Ice Fest Back For Fourth Year

     "I.C.E Fest back to provide winter fun for all"

    In 2020, Zwilling and his team reclaimed the world title after breaking the record most recently set by a group in Quebec. Other teams in Maine and Finland normally jockey for the top spot, but due to COVID-19, the other three had to cancel their events this year. That has allowed Zwilling’s massive creation from 2020 — which was a 10.1-acre ice carousel that measured 749 feet across and weighed 38 million pounds — to spend the last year as the world record holder.

    “This year, if it spins, it will weigh about 45.6 million pounds,” Zwilling said of his attempt to go even larger — about 12 acres of ice — in 2021. “But, Mother Nature determines if it’s going to spin or not.”

    Dog sledding is a popular way to take in the sights at I.C.E. Fest on Green Prairie Fish Lake.

    Though the event is free to attend, donations and sponsorships have helped the family’s 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Pay It Forward Foundation, raise $36,000 for local causes. This year, proceeds from the event will go to the Flyer Pride Pack weekend food program at Little Falls Community Schools and Kids in Need, both of which are organizations aimed at stomping out childhood hunger.

    As I.C.E. Fest now enters its fourth year, there are events for the whole family. Curling, log rolling, spear fishing, Striders in the Snow, dog sled rides, sleigh rides with Santa Claus, powered parachute airplane rides, ice fishing, underwater drone demonstrations, figure skating, igloo building, snowshoeing, powered paragliding rides and an education tent are only some of the activities available to the whole family. Food and beverages will also be available.

    “It’s amazing how many people want to be a part of this,” Ruegemer said, adding that this year’s event has 69 sponsors. “Even after the event, we have people calling us asking us to put them on the list for next year.”

    Raffle tickets are also available both before and during the event for prizes such as a hot tub rental, a hot air balloon ride for two and free pizza for a year. Tickets are $10, with all proceeds going to the Flyer Pride Pack weekend food program and Kids in Need via the Pay It Forward Foundation.
